How to Care for Your Vinyl Sheet Flooring

Using Door Mats

Use door mats outside each of the entrances into your home to help prevent dirt, sand, grit and other substances such as oil, asphalt and driveway sealer from being tracked into the home and onto your vinyl floor. You can also use non-staining mats on your floor as well. It is recommended that you don’t put rubber-backed, latex-backed or coco fiber mats on your floor because they can stain or cause damage to the surface.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

It is recommended that you close your curtains or blinds where extreme sunlight hits the floor whenever possible. The combination of heat and sunlight can cause vinyl flooring to fade or discolor over time.

Floor Protectors

Supporting furniture with wide-bearing, non-staining floor protectors can make all the difference. It is recommended that the protectors be at least one inch in diameter, made of non-pigmented hard plastic, and rest flat on the floor. Using casters with a minimum 3/4" flat surface width or floor protectors are also recommended for all moveable furniture. Make sure any metal protectors are rust-proof as well. Replace your narrow dome furniture rests with wide-bearing ones whenever possible.

When Moving Furniture

When it comes time to move heavy furniture and/or appliances across the floor, always use strips of wood or hardboard runways to protect the vinyl flooring. It is always recommended to use runways even if you have an appliance dolly, or even if the heavy objects are equipped with wheels or rollers.

Routine Sweeping

Regular sweeping of your vinyl flooring, at least once per week, is always recommended to prevent wear.

Prevent Staining

Prevent staining of your vinyl flooring by wiping up spills promptly and never let spills sit for long.

Regular Mopping

Occasional mopping is highly recommended when dirt builds up and sweeping alone is not sufficient. When mopping, use a solution of clear, non-sudsy ammonia based cleaner in one gallon of warm water. To prevent a dulling film, do not use more than the recommended amount of cleaning solution. Do not use soap or detergent products as they can also leave a dulling film. Rinsing is not required with most products, but rinsing can provide the best care and results.
